Chapter Three

When the other Cal walked in and sat on the edge of the bed, he’d already stripped naked. She forced herself to stare at both of them side by side. In their nudity, they looked so nearly identical in the candlelight she wouldn’t have been able to tell them apart at a glance. Only the slight difference between their haircuts distinguished them.

That and the second twin’s rampant erection.

She sat up, blushing as she covered herself with the sheet.

“Why would you be shy in front of me?” He slipped his hand under her hair to massage the nape of her neck.

He looked and sounded like the lover she knew. For all practical purposes, he was. If she stared straight at him and avoided glancing sideways at the first Cal, she could convince herself nothing had changed from any other night.

The twins wouldn’t let her get away with that evasion, though. The second man—Cal Two, as she thought of him—put one arm around her and feathered kisses over her lips and cheeks. Meanwhile, Cal One rubbed her back in expanding spirals. “Look at me.”

The gentle insistence compelled her to turn toward him. He sat beside her, one leg bent under the other, his eyes scanning her face. “You’re not afraid but you’re still unsure.”

Her body yearned to melt for him while her brain buzzed with confusion. “What did you expect?”

“I didn’t know what to expect. You’re the first person I’ve made any attempt to tell the full truth about myself.”

“When you ran out, I was scared to death you’d never come back.” The identical voice in stereo still made her head spin. “You can’t imagine how grateful I am that you’re giving me a chance. I couldn’t stand to lose you.”

“I don’t want to lose you either.” She leaned into the hand rubbing her spine. “Now that I know you’re not lying or tricking me, I’ll do anything to make this work.” Blurting out that vow, she surprised herself. She realized she meant it when she didn’t shrink away from Cal Two’s arm around her waist. He nuzzled the hollow of her throat while Cal One kissed the back of her neck. Warmth rippled through her.

“I sense layers of positive and negative in you,” one of them said.

“Let me strip them away to the true core of your feelings,” the other said.

“I’ll go as slowly as you want.” Cal One pulled her down onto the mattress. “Turn over.” He nudged her onto her stomach, tucking a pillow under her head. “Maybe I pushed too hard there after all. It might help if you closed your eyes at first.”

When she followed that instruction, she could imagine the two voices came from one larynx. Hands massaged knots out of her shoulder muscles as Cal said, “This is totally new to me too.”

“I’ve never made love to one woman with both bodies at once.”

She raised her head for a second. “You haven’t?”

He guided her head back to the pillow. “Of course not. Like I said earlier, I never met another one I thought I could trust with my secret.
